Compression Therapy //
GRADUATED COMPRESSION STOCKINGS
The medical term of an elastic stocking is the "graduated compression stocking or hosiery".
When the stockings are put on, they creat pressure gradients over your legs. That is, the highest pressures are on the ankles, followed by gradually reducing pressures across the calfs and knees, with the lowest pressure on the thighs. The pressure gradients facilitate leg blood to flow upward so that the venous pressure of the legs is reduced.
To establish an optimal pressure gradient, it is very important to choose the compressure stocking of a correct size. A graduated compression hosiery is a medical instrument and is strongly suggested to be prescribed by your doctor.
INDICATIONS FOR COMPRESSION THERAPY
-
Various degrees of spider veins, reticular veins or varicose veins
-
Acute or chronic deep vein thrombosis
-
Skin changes due to venous insufficiency (venous eczema, pigmentation, lipodermatosclerosis, atrophic blanche)
-
Active or healed venous leg ulcers
-
Posture-related leg edema
-
Prevention for people who need standing or sitting for a long time
-
Patients who need bed rest for a long time (ex. > 1 week) after operation or trauma to prevent deep vein thrombosis
-
Prevention of deep vein thrombosis and edema on long-haul flights (more than four hours)
-
Lymphedema
-
Pregnant women
CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR COMPRESSION THERAPY
-
Severe peripheral arterial occlusive or stenotic diseases
-
Patients who undergo leg skin graft recently
-
Acute infective thrombophlebitis
-
Acute skin infection
-
Acute decompensated heart failure
-
phlegmasia coerulea dolens (severe progression of venous thrombosis with total occlusion of all veins of a transverse section)
COMPRESSION CLASSES
The composition, weaving techniques, sizes and shapes can affect the accuracy of the graduated pressures on your legs. A wrong compression stocking can not creat a correct pressure gradient but on the contrary, it may even worsen the situation of your legs.
The medical compression stockings are classified into different compression classes according to different ankle pressures (mmHg) they creat.
